Canon of the Mass
I’ve mentioned before that I sing with a group called Collegium Cantorum, a choral group that focuses on Renaissance polyphony. For the past six weeks we’ve been rehearsing for a concert featuring three canonic Mass settings from the late 15th, early 16th, late 20th centuries: Missa prolationum by Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1415 – 1497) Missa L’homme […]
En vacances! (almost)
I did it! As of right now, I’m officially on vacation until the Monday after Thanksgiving! I just sent off my last work-related emails and am about to pack up my things. My flight to Paris leaves Sunday night. Between now and then, all I have to do is sing at a dress rehearsal and two […]
Can’t we be merry?
Last Sunday during our Elders Quorum lesson on what’s going to happen after the Second Coming, we learned that, according to Brigham Young, life during the Millennium is going to be pretty much like it is now. For example, people will “eat and drink and will wear clothes.” If you ask me, that’s pretty disappointing. Not because we […]
Happy Ending
After learning about my failure to get opera tickets this morning, Amanda jumped online and managed to snag a pair of tickets to the ballet. So instead of seeing La Cenerentola (Rossini’s operatic take on the Cinderella story), we’ll be seeing Cendrillon (Prokofiev’s balletic portrayal of Cinderella) performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. Yay!!! Needless to say, I’m ecstatic. […]
What I do for art…
Tickets for La Cenerentola at the Paris National Opera went on sale this morning at 9:00am Paris time. So I set my alarm and logged onto the site at 2:55am Eastern Time. After 40 minutes of bleary-eyed, finger-crossed suspense, I got through — only to discover that the performances had sold out. Boo! Now, back to bed.
Snowtober!
Since it’s a competition, I just want to point out that Colorado wasn’t the only place to have it’s first big winter storm this week. Today, right in the middle of my planting, we were clobbered with SNOWTOBER 2011!!! See that? Wintry mix all over my arm. This is precisely the extreme weather that the weather […]
The Klingon Fifth
I sing with a group called Collegium Cantorum, a small, eclectic group of singers led by a man with a Tolkien-esque beard and a remarkable passion for Renaissance polyphonie (i.e., sacred music from 12th through 15th centuries). The music is beautiful and, like yoga, deceptively difficult — it requires enormous concentration and control to do well. […]
The Bow Tie
I don’t think of myself as a wearer of bow ties. And yet, when I think about it, bow ties have marked some important stages in my life. First, I was a cute little kid, wearing a McKay plaid clip-on number with blue and white seersucker shorts. Then I was a penguin with a red-and-yellow polka-dotted bow tie, […]
Careful what you ask for
When first started at the law firm, I was asked to fill out a form indicating the type of work I wanted to do. I checked a few of the boxes and, in the “comments” area, wrote that I wanted to do the media-related transactional work that two of the partners (I’ll call them EDG and […]
Life as a two year old
Whenever I visit my sisters, with their kids, there’s usually a time of day when the kids fall apart and become complete basket cases. More often than not, the problem requires nothing more than a little food and, if it’s really bad, some sleep. Funny how life as an adult really is no different. For as much […]
