I am an American lawyer living in London. This blog is an exercise in personal storytelling and memory-keeping, because life is full of stories that become richer when shared. I write for myself, my family and friends, and for anyone who comes and finds something they like.
When I was asked once to describe myself in terms of fictional characters, I said I was a cross between Mr Darcy (Pride & Prejudice) and Scarlett O’Hara (Gone with the Wind) but aspired to be like Cary Grant’s Dudley in The Bishop’s Wife. I suppose that’s the origin of the blog’s name: In rejecting Mr Darcy’s first proposal, Lizzy Bennett reproves him for having not “behaved in a more gentlemanlike manner”. And when Darcy renews his proposal at the end of the novel (ch. 58), he explains that those words had been the catalyst for the self-reflection and change that ultimately brought him and Lizzy together. While this blog is not about self-improvement, I think life generally is — and since I write about my life, it’s good to be reminded of how I want to be.
