Things I love: Discovering how two things go together in a way I’d never thought of before

When I was in Morocco last summer, I bought several large ornamental plates.  One of them, with its rich yellow and red pattern and silver latticework overlay, is a lovely piece but very different from the other blue and white ceramics I brought home.  I didn’t know what to do with it.  There was no obvious place on the wall and it seemed out of place wherever I tried to hang it.

Same thing for a pretty little vintage cloisonne vase that I found in a shop in Colorado (the same shop that had the butterflies).  I loved the shape, the turquoise color, and the floral motif, but I didn’t have anywhere to put it that made sense.  Wherever I put it, it just felt random.

Then one day I started focusing on the space between the ceiling and the top of the bookcase in my bedroom.  I didn’t like it.  It felt empty; a little awkward.  I stewed and stewed.  Then it dawned on me:  “What if I did this . . . ”

  2. That is a great plate. How do you get all of these pieces of awesome home in your suitcase w/o breaking anything?

  3. I brought an extra hardsided carry-on suitcase so that I could fill it with ceramics. The vases went in that suitcase, the plates I carried by hand, and they all went on the plane with me. (I shipped the rugs and blankets separately via FedEx, so I didn't have to worry about those.) It was super inconvenient to lug the ceramics through Spain after leaving Morocco, but happily nothing broke.
